Artist Fausto Fernandez has been steadily churning out a very beautiful and unique body of work here in Phoenix. His use of sewing patterns as a guide for each piece has resulted in works that are filled with all kinds of possibilities. A formally trained artist out of The University of Texas in El Paso, Fernandez has taken an "outsider's" approach to his projects, keeping them energetic, fresh, spontaneous, and exciting. When I first looked into Fernandez's work, I whimsically thought, "Henry Darger" and his resourceful techniques of using scrap paper, phone books, colored pencils, tracings, etc. Fausto Fernandez also thinks in these resourceful terms, but instead, with a swift, agressive style that Darger would have been incapable of executing, being bound by his limited, idiosyncratic and painstaking approach. That is where the comparison ends, as Fernandez moves forward artistically with spectacular control of hue, regimentals, unusual symmetries, and his original brand of floral patterns. In method, Fernandez is more matador than mason.

Fernandez says of his work:

The blue prints, sewing patterns and maps in my new work represent the guides that we follow in our life to create a more stable way to go through daily routines.

See some of his work here.
